A Vampire’s Mate
(A Dark Protectors/Rebels Novella)
by Rebecca Zanetti
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti comes a new story in her Dark Protectors/Rebels series…
There’s nothing Jasper Maxwell likes better than a good chase. He is patient and cunning, and he is known as one of the coldest hunters in the immortal realm. As a vampire with a hint of demon blood in him, he stands out even amongst the finest trackers in the shifter world. So the fact that his mate has managed to escape him for the past five decades is something that keeps him intrigued and more obsessed with every passing year. The game is beyond delicious until a century old enemy resurfaces, putting his sweet little mate in danger. At that point, he has no choice but to secure her.
Leah Ferry enjoys immortality almost as much as she thrills at the cat and mouse game she’s playing with the Maxwell Hunter. Once human, she figured she’d live her life wearing pearls and vacuuming in pressed dresses only to be thrown into the immortal world where freedom is intoxicating. On a mission to take down degenerate humans and make them pay, things go wrong, so per her usual arrangement, she starts to run. But this time, her sexy and deadly vampire mate stands in her way. She quickly learns that the sensual chase between them was nothing compared to the real danger coming for her.

Do you do anything to treat yourself when you finish writing a book?
I usually catch up on laundry after writing a book but sometimes treat myself to a facial at our local spa.
What one piece of advice would you give an aspiring writer?
Don’t hold yourself back. Put everything you have in the book that you’re writing and don’t keep something for the next book. You’ll find what you need when you get to that book.
Can you give us a few lines from your work in progress?
This is from One Dark Kiss, the next Grimm Bargains novel:
“Is this where you leave all the bodies?” I gingerly pick my way down the stairs. Cool air washes over me.
His chuckle is dark. “If I wanted to kill you, Peaflower, you’d already be dead.”
Somehow, I’m not comforted by that fact. I follow him into a square-shaped basement with dirt on the floor and no windows. I shiver. This would be a great place to leave a body, actually.
He walks to the far concrete wall, plants his hand right above his head, and waits.
I gulp, the hair on the back of my neck standing up. “Listen, I’m not sure what…”
A door slides open in front of him. He looks over his shoulder and flashes me a grin, one that warms me in inappropriate places.
“Come on, Rosalie,” he says, gesturing.
I have to admit, my curiosity springs wide awake.
____
If you could watch one scene from this book be played out like a movie, which one would it be and why?
I think it would be the first scene, when Leah is hunting down an immortal enemy in a dark alley in Paris, and Jasper roars in on a motorcycle, catches her, and plunks her on his bike in front of him while smoothly setting the helmet over her head, going 100 miles an hour.
What’s the most awkward thing that happens to you on a regular basis?
I have a bit of social anxiety, and I go blank on people’s names. Even if I’ve known them forever, if the anxiety kicks in, I completely forget. It’s so embarrassing.
