Caress of Darkness
(A Dark Pleasures Novella)
by Julie Kenner
From the first moment I saw him, I knew that Rainer Engel was like no other man. Dangerously sexy and darkly mysterious, he both enticed me and terrified me.
I wanted to run–to fight against the heat that was building between us–but there was nowhere to go. I needed his help as much as I needed his touch. And so help me, I knew that I would do anything he asked in order to have both.
But even as our passion burned hot, the secrets in Raine’s past reached out to destroy us … and we would both have to make the greatest sacrifice to find a love that would last forever.

I have to tell you, I absolutely adored Caress of Darkness and it grabbed me from the very beginning. This novella kicks off a new paranormal series for you and has an interesting hero. I would love to know your inspiration behind it and his abilities.
Thank you!! I’m thrilled you enjoyed Caress of Darkness, because I am totally in love with this series … and these heroes!
As for inspiration, in a way, it was self-inspired, LOL! I absolutely love the erotic romances that I’m writing as J. Kenner. The characters, the stories, the drama, the heat. And I have always loved writing paranormal, which I’ve written throughout my entire writing career (both light and dark paranormal). So I wanted to create a paranormal series with heroes as sexy, commanding, enigmatic (and, yes, dangerous) as the Stark, Stark International, and Most Wanted heroes. But I also wanted to add a paranormal flair. But how? I don’t recall exactly how I came up with the immortal concept (too many viewings of Highlander, perhaps) but it was the idea of the phoenix fire that truly got my creative juices flowing.
Speaking of the new series, do you already have an idea of how many books it will be?
Honestly, it depends on how readers respond. The series is set up to have quite a few books … and I am dying to write all of them. Right now, I have plans for Raine’s story (Caress of Darkness), Mal’s story (Find Me in Darkness, Find Me in Pleasure, Find Me in Passion), and Dante’s story (Caress of Pleasure, the next 1001 Dark Nights novella).
If readers respond to the series the way I hope they will, then there are several more stories after that featuring other heroes that readers will meet in both Caress of Darkness and in the Find Me trilogy.
Which is a long way of saying five books minimum, but the world is big and vibrant enough to fill over a dozen stories, and I hope to do just that!
Your recent releases have been primarily erotic romance, are you exited to get back into the paranormal world?
I am! I love paranormal stories—they’re larger than life and get my imagination flowing. The possibilities are truly endless. And the truth is, I was weaned on paranormal and SciFi books and television. So in a lot of ways, paranormal is my comfort zone.
There have been a lot of paranormal books made into movies. Do you have a favorite adaptation?
I’m going to have to go back to the classics on this one, because I think Rosemary’s Baby is one of the best book adaptations ever (paranormal or not!).
Speaking of adaptations, Carpe Demon, the first book in your Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom series has been optioned for a TV show on the CW! Will you have a lot of input on the show or be able to help with any of the casting?
I’d love to say that I’ll be actively involved, but the truth is that while I have already and will continue to consult with the producers, on the day to day aspects, I don’t really have a role. Frankly, I didn’t push for one. I’m incredibly busy writing books, and I love that! And right now, there is some exceptional work being done in television, and the folks who have Carpe Demon in their hands right now are incredibly talented. I trust them to take my vision and theirs and create something viewers will adore!
Ok, the holiday season is upon us, and time for some gift giving! Do you have any favorite gifts you like to give or receive?
You know, not really. I tend to mix it up every year. Although there is a local candy store in my home town that makes the best chocolate covered popcorn. It’s safe to say someone gets that every year!
Do you have any holiday traditions that make the holidays special to you and your family?
OK, don’t judge me, but we make nachos on Christmas Eve and watch Home Alone. (And after the kids are in bed, my husband and I watch Die Hard. Because, you know, it has a Christmas theme!). At some point in the season, I always watch It’s a Wonderful Life and A Charlie Brown Christmas, too!
Before we know it, 2015 will be here. What are you looking forward to in the New Year?
So many things, but the biggest is a family trip to London and Paris. Can’t wait!!
Can we have a little insight into what do you have in store next for the 1,001 Dark Nights series?
Dante!!!!! Readers will get to meet him in Caress of Darkness (and also in the Find Me trilogy). Love, love, love him … and I think readers will, too!
